Our commitment in post-mining rehabilitation
We carrying out reclamation as part of our Mine Closure Plan, in accordance with Indonesia Government Regulation No. 78 of 2010 on Reclamation and Post-Mining.
Post-Mining Land Reclamation and Rehabilitation Process
Our earnestness in land rehabilitation starts from the land clearing phase by limiting the total area of open-pit mining. Our mine planning is integrated with land rehabilitation, as well as effluent and sedimentation control.
Post-mining land rehabilitation is conducted through a backfilling system, using topsoil and other soil layers from the land stripping process. The stages include reshaping the land surface to meet standard slope requirements, returning topsoil and soil layers, controlling erosion, constructing drainage systems, building access roads for revegetation, reforestation, plant maintenance, and monitoring the success of the rehabilitation.
By December 2025, the total land that has been reclaimed has reached 3,863 Ha, with a total of more than 5.8 million trees planted.
Transboundary forestation
We engage in land rehabilitation and reforestation beyond our operation areas, particularly in critical lands and watersheds as mandated by Ministry of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 59 of 2019 regarding Planting for Watershed Rehabilitation.
The watershed rehabilitation activities aim to restore, maintain, and enhance watershed functions, including environmental conservation, by planting various types of timber and non-timber forest products (NTFPs) according to site suitability. Furthermore, watershed rehabilitation activities can improve the welfare of communities living around the forest by promoting sustainable forest management practices.

Reclamation report
Periodically we report environmental performance and issues through reports on the Environmental Management Plan/Environmental Monitoring Plan (RKL-RPL), the Ministry of Environment and Forestry Electronic Reporting Information System (SIMPEL-KLHK), and reclamation reports according to the timetable set out in government regulations.
Post-mining closure
PT Vale Indonesia (PTVI) operates three active mining sites—Sorowako, IGP Morowali, and IGP Pomalaa—all of which are still in production and have not entered closure. The estimated mine life extends to around 2044–2045, with full closure and rehabilitation activities expected to continue until 2060. Closure planning is integrated with operations through progressive rehabilitation, allowing disturbed areas to be reduced over time and enabling a smoother transition to final closure.
Formal Mine Closure Plans have been completed for Sorowako and IGP Morowali, while the plan for IGP Pomalaa is still under development in line with its project stage. These plans aim to ensure safe decommissioning, environmental impact minimization, and a sustainable post-mining legacy.
The closure plans are regularly updated to align with operational and regulatory changes. The latest revisions were submitted in October 2022 (Sorowako) and August 2024 (Morowali), both of which have received approval from Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) in November 2023 and November 2024, respectively.
Land Reclamation and Rehabilitation in Numbers
By December 2025, the total land that has been reclaimed has reached 3,863 Ha, with a total of more than 5.8 million trees planted.
