Ecosystem preservation is a core element of PTVI’s stewardship model. By applying strict containment hierarchies, the company works to isolate, mitigate, and offset the ecological impacts of land clearing, minimizing net wildlife disruptions around concession borders.

Approach

PTVI applies the mitigation hierarchy: avoid, minimize, restore and offset. In 2025, Critical Habitat Assessments and Ecosystem Services Assessments were completed across operational areas, informing site-level Biodiversity Management Plans and the development of Biodiversity Action Plans and offset plans.

The stated goal is No Net Loss across operational areas, with Net Gain pursued where feasible. Assessment and monitoring involve communities, biodiversity specialists, universities and environmental research institutions.

  • Integrate biodiversity screening into site selection, design and mine planning.

  • Protect sensitive terrestrial, freshwater, marine, karst and Malili Lake system values.

  • Monitor protected and endemic species and adapt controls based on findings.

  • Restore disturbed habitats through progressive reclamation and conservation initiatives.

Performance

  • Conserved and cultivated 72,296 local, endemic, and protected trees at Sorowako (a 6% year-on-year increase).
  • Ex-situ conservation programs successfully maintained 18 Timor deer and 1 lowland anoa.
  • PT Vale also installed 25 artificial reef structures at Bulupoloe Island and removed more than 200 kilograms of coastal waste, bringing the reported total to 150 artificial reef units in surrounding waters.

PT Vale Biodiversity Policy and Documents

Implementation of biodiversity management in our processes and value chain to reduce the impacts on biodiversity and protected areas that may be affected by our activities and seeking potential applications to “no net loss” and “net positive impact” approaches, as well as not developing new mines in protected areas prior the Government’s approval. We included initiatives and commitment related to biodiversity in PT Vale Indonesia's Sustainability Policy.

Sawerigading Wallacea Biodiversity Park

As part of Our commitment to biodiversity conservation, we established the Sawerigading Wallacea Biodiversity Park, serving as a conservation area for flora and fauna, an educational hub for biodiversity, a recreational space, and a jogging track. The park was inaugurated on March 30, 2023, by President Joko Widodo.
