

PT Vale controls operations-derived and community waste through targeted segregation and recycling streams. Using circular economy principles, the goal is to systematically decouple production increases from escalating baseline landfill disposal numbers.
Approach
Waste is segregated at source into hazardous, non-hazardous and mining-related streams. The management chain covers storage, transport, treatment, recycling and disposal, with traceability and compliance monitoring. Hazardous waste is stored in licensed facilities and transferred to authorized operators.
The 4R principles of reduce, reuse, recycle and recovery guide operational and community initiatives, including improved segregation, organic-waste processing, community waste banks and material repurposing.

Performance
Sorowako hazardous waste decreased to 2,353 tons, while non-hazardous waste reached 5,349 tons. Intensive scaling at growth projects generated 85.24 tons (Morowali) and 58.42 tons (Pomalaa) of hazardous materials. Managed 118 tons of waste through the TPS3R community waste management facility in Bahodopi.
