Site Morowali

Site Morowali is PT Vale Indonesia Tbk's operational presence in Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi, where the company conducts nickel mining activities and advances the development of the Indonesia Growth Project (IGP) Morowali. As part of this integrated development, the project includes a High-Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) processing facility designed to produce Mixed Hydroxide Precipitate (MHP), a key raw material for electric vehicle batteries.

Supported by an investment of approximately US$2 billion, the IGP Morowali project is designed to achieve an annual production capacity of approximately 60,000 to 73,000 tons of nickel, backed by integrated infrastructure, including port facilities and an energy supply of up to 500 MW.

Mining operations are managed by PT Vale Indonesia, while the processing facility is developed through PT Bahodopi Nickel Smelting Indonesia (BNSI), a joint venture with global partners. The project plays a strategic role in advancing downstream mineral processing in Indonesia, strengthening the country’s position in the global electric vehicle supply chain, and promoting sustainable development through ESG principles.

The plant is being constructed within an industrial park powered by green energy and is designed to achieve net-zero operations.

The plant will be equipped with R&D facilities, facilitating knowledge transfer to Indonesia.

Total investment value reaches US$2.0 billion (including the plant and mining operations).

The plant is scheduled for completion in 2027.

As of July 2025, the workforce exceeded 3,665 employees.

Priority on Environmental, Social and Governance

Protecting the Environment

We are committed to bringing our best operating practices from Sorowako to this expansion project. Regarding the environment, IGP Morowali will apply good mining practices as has been implemented in Sorowako.

We are also committed to advancing the economy, increasing community capacity, and protecting the environment in conducting business and operations.

Even though the mining and processing activities at IGP Morowali have not started yet, we continue to run various social programs. In 2015-2021, we have disbursed IDR46.06 billion for various Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) programs. One of them, in 2021, we have started introducing the Organic System of Rice Intensification (SRI) concept to farmers in the empowerment area.

Talent Priority and Governance

We are committed to complying with laws and regulations and upholding human rights.

Our recruitment process at IGP Morowali adheres to our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) commitment. This project is projected to absorb up to 15 thousand workers in the construction phase.

We will also optimize the involvement of local entrepreneurs in the Morowali Site. We have conducted a series of Technical Training activities for Local Entrepreneurs to Participate in Goods and Services Tenders.
