PT Vale integrates closure planning across all mining lifecycles to manage the transition of extraction areas into stable post-mining environments. The strategy focuses on balancing progressive structural land rehabilitation with long-term regional development goals.

Approach

Mine closure planning is fully integrated into early-stage operational planning across all assets, including the Sorowako Operation, IGP Morowali, and IGP Pomalaa. The approach emphasizes progressive land restoration via landform stabilization, soil management, revegetation, and ecosystem rehabilitation to counter erosion and sedimentation. 

With active operations expected to continue into the mid-2040s, progressive rehabilitation and adaptive closure planning remain key elements of PT Vale's commitment to responsible mining, environmental stewardship, and sustainable land management.

Rehabilitation Approach

Implementation of progressive mine reclamation for disturbed areas of previous mining activities by integrating mining and reclamation planning to effectively minimize the mine footprint toward closure. 

Mining Closure Approach

Developing and implementing a mine closure plan and regularly updating it through stakeholder  engagement and public consultation. This ensures the optimization of creating a safe and sustainable  environment while providing new alternative economic resources to support ongoing regional  development in accordance with its designation.

We are committed to progressively reclaiming 70% of ex-mining land by 2025. By August 2024, the total land that has been reclaimed has reached 3,817 ha, with a total of 4.8 million trees.

Performance

PT Vale completed post-mining reclamation covering 156.67 hectares in Sorowako and 1.42 hectares in Bahodopi (IGP Morowali) in 2025. Cumulative reclamation within the Sorowako concession reached 65.09% of the cumulative open mine area, with an 86% rehabilitation success rate, surpassing regulatory requirements. Land disturbance during the year was primarily associated with growth project development at IGP Pomalaa, while unreclaimed disturbed mine area across all operations totaled 3,222.13 hectares at the beginning of 2025.

Beyond its concession areas, PT Vale also advanced watershed rehabilitation efforts, reaching a cumulative area of 18,849 hectares across five provinces. This program supports landscape restoration, ecosystem recovery, erosion control, and the long-term sustainability of critical watershed functions.

Governed by the corporate Sustainability Policy, which mandates integrating mine planning with progressive reclamation to minimize the operational footprint. It requires regular closure plan updates through stakeholder engagement and public consultation to deliver alternative economic resources post-mining.
