Water is a shared resource supporting hydropower, mineral processing, sanitation, communities and ecosystems. We manage withdrawal, treatment, reuse and discharge to protect availability and quality.

Approach

Water risks are managed through the Environmental Management System, AMDAL, RKL-RPL monitoring, site treatment infrastructure and accredited laboratory analysis. Sorowako uses more than 100 settling ponds, the Pakalangkai wastewater treatment plant and Lamella Gravity Settler units.

Efficiency measures include the SWAP online monitoring system, leak and runoff controls, and water recycling for cooling, chemical preparation, road watering and equipment cooling.

Manage withdrawal with regard to other users and ecosystem needs.
Treat operational and domestic effluent before controlled discharge.
Monitor TSS, chromium, hexavalent chromium, iron and nickel at defined points.
Increase reuse and improve metering, data quality and site-level reporting.

Performance

Sorowako operations withdrew 31,589,023 m³ and discharged 89,695,408 m³, with increased tracking accuracy driven by flowmeter upgrades. Growth projects recorded 17,873 m³ (IGP Morowali) and 9,969 m³ (IGP Pomalaa)

Towuti Oil Leak

On 23 August 2025, an oil pipeline leak occurred in Lioka Village, East Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi. PT Vale immediately activated its Emergency Response Group (ERG) and coordinated with government authorities, community representatives, and relevant agencies to contain and mitigate the incident.
