Building Value Through Sustainable Mining Practices: Investment Minister Praises PTVI’s ESG Approach in Morowali

As Indonesia accelerates its downstream mineral processing agenda, Minister of Investment and Downstream Industries/Head of BKPM and CEO of Danantara Indonesia, Rosan P. Roeslani, emphasized the importance of balancing industrial growth with environmental sustainability. Roeslani delivered the message during a visit to PT Vale Indonesia Growth Project (IGP) Morowali on Wednesday (July 22), following the arrival ceremony of an autoclave—the key processing unit for the High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) project at the Sambalagi facility.

Morowali, July 22, 2026 – As Indonesia accelerates its downstream mineral processing agenda, Minister of Investment and Downstream Industries/Head of BKPM and CEO of Danantara Indonesia, Rosan P. Roeslani, emphasized the importance of balancing industrial growth with environmental sustainability.

Roeslani delivered the message during a visit to PT Vale Indonesia’s (PTVI) Indonesia Growth Project (IGP) Morowali on Wednesday (July 22), following the arrival ceremony of an autoclave—the key processing unit for the High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) project at the Sambalagi facility.

During the visit, Roeslani was accompanied by several Danantara executives, including Febriany Eddy, Managing Director of Danantara Asset Management. The delegation was welcomed by PTVI Chief Executive Officer Bernardus Irmanto, Chief Project Officer Muhammad Asril, and other members of PTVI’s management team.

The visit provided an opportunity to review progress on the strategic project and observe several sustainability initiatives implemented by PTVI as part of its operations. Among the sites visited was the company’s nursery facility, which supports post-mining land rehabilitation and reclamation programs.

At the nursery, Bernardus Irmanto outlined PTVI’s environmental management efforts, including nursery development, land rehabilitation and reclamation, sediment pond management, and a range of biodiversity and environmental conservation programs. The presentation highlighted the company’s commitment to ensuring that operational activities are conducted in parallel with environmental stewardship.

Set within PTVI’s operational area, the nursery serves as a tangible example of that commitment. More than a seedling production center, it reflects the company’s long-term strategy of integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles throughout its business lifecycle. Through these initiatives, PTVI aims to balance industrial development, environmental protection, and community empowerment.

Roeslani commended the company’s efforts.

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to visit PTVI’s operations in Morowali. What stands out most to me is the strong commitment to sustainability and the balance maintained between environmental and social considerations. We have seen the nursery facilities and the implementation of international-standard mining best practices. My hope is that these efforts will continue to be upheld,” said Roeslani.

His remarks reflect the growing focus on the quality of investment entering Indonesia. As the country advances its downstream processing strategy to create greater domestic value, sustainability has become a critical foundation for ensuring that economic growth remains inclusive and responsible.

Roeslani stressed that a strong industry is one that grows alongside the communities and environments in which it operates.

“Equally important is maintaining alignment between business objectives, ESG principles, and the interests of surrounding communities. By doing so, investment can deliver sustainable benefits—not only for the company, but also for the region and its people,” he added.

In addition to the nursery visit, the delegation toured the project’s jetty, one of the key infrastructure assets supporting operational activities.

The group also had the opportunity to observe PTVI’s mining operations from the air.

The aerial overview demonstrated how production activities are carried out in parallel with responsible mining practices, including mine area management, environmental restoration, and protection efforts. This approach forms part of PTVI’s broader commitment to supporting Indonesia’s downstream industrialization agenda—not only by creating economic value, but also by delivering long-term benefits for communities and the environment.

Separately, PTVI President Commissioner Fauzambi Syahrul Multhazar also expressed his appreciation for the progress of the Morowali project. According to him, the project demonstrates a high level of readiness in both planning and execution while aligning closely with the government’s downstream industrial development strategy.

“In my view, this project has been well prepared, well planned, and will be executed effectively. It is also fully aligned with the government’s downstream processing agenda. Morowali, in my opinion, serves as an excellent pilot project,” he said.

For PTVI, downstream processing is about more than developing mineral-processing facilities. It is about creating a lasting development legacy—one that balances economic growth, environmental sustainability, and community well-being for generations to come.
